Romantso @ Common room

As a researcher based in Athens focused on rural creative hubs, my recent visit to Commonroom in Vienna was an enlightening experience that bridged two very different creative landscapes. Funded by the ECHN mobility grants, this peer-to-peer exchange was not just a chance to learn from a hub at the heart of an urban environment, but also to build a solid foundation for my own mapping project on cultural and creative hubs in Austria. My colleague and I, both researching the same topic, approached this research from different angles, but our shared interest in understanding the dynamics of creative spaces helped us collaborate efficiently.

A Space for Art, Design, and Social Dialogue

Commonroom’s diverse programming, which includes exhibitions, workshops, and performances, immediately caught my attention. The space is an intersection of contemporary art and design, with an ethos that encourages social engagement and cross-disciplinary dialogue. It’s not just a place for established artists; the space actively supports emerging talent, giving fresh voices a platform to present innovative work. What I found particularly striking about Commonroom was its focus on socially engaged projects—projects that directly address community needs, creating a dynamic connection between art and society. This level of engagement was exactly what I was hoping to witness and learn from during my visit.

The venue itself, blending gallery space with creative workshops and a performance area, became a lively hub for collaboration and creative exchange. During my visit, I had the opportunity to attend a workshop on contemporary design practices, which broadened my understanding of how creative spaces in Austria cater to both the artistic community and the public. This experience also provided me with valuable insights that I plan to incorporate into the larger mapping project of cultural hubs across Austria.

Preparing for the Mapping Project

Throughout my stay, I focused on collecting data and experiences that would inform the upcoming mapping of cultural and creative hubs in Austria. The time spent at Commonroom was invaluable in refining my approach. By observing the intersection of art, design, and cultural exchange in an urban setting, I could begin to see how these models might differ in rural creative hubs—something that had been at the core of my research back in Athens.

My collaboration with my colleague, who was also working on the same research topic, provided additional depth to our findings. While I concentrated on gathering qualitative insights from local artists and community members at Commonroom, my colleague took a more analytical approach, focusing on the infrastructure and resources available to creative hubs in Austria. Together, our combined perspectives created a more holistic view of the creative ecosystem in Vienna.

Conclusion

This peer-to-peer exchange through ECHN has been an essential step toward a broader understanding of the cultural landscape in Austria. The insights gained at Commonroom not only enriched my mapping project but also provided me with ideas on how rural creative hubs, like the ones in Athens, can integrate more socially engaged and multidisciplinary approaches. Commonroom’s commitment to fostering community dialogue and collaboration left a lasting impression, and I look forward to incorporating these lessons into the research as I continue to map the landscape of creative hubs in Austria.
